This technique is probably the most common Cast off method, and is certainly the easiest to learn.

Plain Cast-Off Step 1 Begin by working the first two stitches in pattern.
Plain Cast-Off Step 2 Then, insert the left needle into the *first* stitch on the right needle, as shown (if the stitch is a Purl stitch, it may be easier to insert the needle in the back of the stitch, rather than as depicted):
Plain Cast-Off Step 3 Now, draw the first stitch over the second stitch.
Plain Cast-Off Step 4 Lastly, slip the first stitch off the right hand needle.

The ultimate result is that the first stitch is looped over the second stitch. Now, work the next stitch in pattern, and repeat the process.
